Purpose
The Governor's Task Force on Chronic Kidney Disease, in partnership with the Renal Care community will present the Houston Chronic Kidney Disease conference (CKD) on June 20, 2009 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Houston, Texas. The purpose of the conference is to alert the non-renal physicians of the early signs and symptoms of CKD and the importance of early detection, treatment/management of CKD and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). The conference is hosted by Walk the Talk America, a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization. Dr. Osama Gaber, presiding chair of the governor’s Task Force on CKD will chair the symposium. The conference faculty will comprise of nephrologists, renal transplant experts and other physicians/healthcare professionals from the Texas Medical Center Institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Medical School and other medical establishments in the Houston area.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is commonly encountered in clinical practice. Unfortunately, the prevalence of CKD is increasing country-wide and in all ethnic groups. In many individuals, CKD progresses to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis or transplantation, which adds significantly to the economic and disease burden on society. Patients with CKD are at a great risk of cardiovascular complications which lead to premature death and disability. Hence, it is vital to identify individuals who are susceptible to developing CKD and render appropriate treatment to prevent disease progression and target organ damage. This program is designed to provide an update on the markers of CKD and discuss how early intervention may be beneficial to protect public health.
We recognize the unmet educational needs of the non-renal healthcare providers who are the first contact for these high-risk CKD patients and would like to bridge that gap. It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend this conference to support our commitment to improving patients' quality of life and appreciate your support. Together, we can make a difference.
